The Executive Branch of the U. S. government was very well represented at the Presidents' Day Cookie Cafe. The 2018 Parents and mom Paige Calhoun did a wonderful job providing a sweet setting for the visiting Presidents.

While the holiday belongs to Lincoln and Washington, several other "Commanders in Chief" stopped by to celebrate with both their predecessors and successors.

While conclusions could be drawn, President Donald J. Trump was the most popular president, judging by requests to have him in many photos, which he graciously agreed to pose for. Our 45th President seemed very impressed with Cookie Cafe, especially by the "yuuuuge" array of treats supplied by the 2018 parents. Also, the '18 parents were very generous in supplying funds so that the CC moms were able to purchase lots of wonderful fruit and berries for the mids. The midshipmen's eyes lighted up when they saw all the variety, some of which could be topped with the homemade whipped cream we made - bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries - both frozen and fresh - mangos, apples, oranges, cherries and pears. Truly, the fruit rivals the cookies each week in popularity. Thank you parents for funding this extravaganza (I believe there was even an alumni parent on the donation list!). There were lots of happy smiles when the mids saw how beautiful and colorful the fruit looked. We were also able to make the fruit last to the end of the day and left some of the extra oranges in the Land Hall refrigerator for those not able to get to us during the day.

We had a little fun quizzing the mids on their Presidential knowledge. Presidents Truman and Carter gave the mids the most trouble, but only for a few. The students were good natured posing for photos while they hid behind a presidential face. Several mids also found themselves enshrined on Mt. Rushmore.

We hope this is not the last time we can play host to someone from the Executive Branch. We have extended an invitation to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao. The Cookie Cafe moms would be thrilled if she accepted our invitation and spent some time with our amazing students.

Presidents Washington and Lincoln had some parting thoughts for the midshipmen, which seem particularly apropos to Kings Pointers:

“Perseverance and spirit have done wonders in all ages.”
- George Washington

I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.
- Abraham Lincoln
