Seven hundred mids and staff found their way to Land Hall Thursday for the first Cookie Cafe of the new school year. The smiles on every visitor, including some alumni who had arrived early for Homecoming Weekend, were contagious. At times there wasn't a seat to be had.

The Tri-State Parents Association kicked off the year with a wonderful selection of cookies and some quick breads in addition to sending us a huge sheet cake. You've set the bar high for those following you. The end of the day's supply was a testament to how your cookies were received - we literally had about 3 dozen cookies left after starting with about 400 dozen.

Tri-State's largess also funded an impressive array of fruit - strawberries, apples, pineapple, cantaloupe, bananas, oranges and clementines were a definite hit with the students. When we finished the day there were only 4 lonely bananas left and the coffee pot, drink coolers and 12 gallons of milk drained dry.

Thank you to all our volunteers who came to serve the Regiment, including alumni moms Denise Kummer and Claire Hungerford. And while these two moms live on Long Island, the trip can take them well over 1 1/2 hours one way, a tangible expression of their devotion to the midshipmen.

Our newbie plebes quickly picked up on the vibe of Cookie Cafe - lots of cookies and a chance to laugh out loud. We told them their job consisted of eating lots of cookies. It's touching to see siblings, both attending Kings Point, to meet for those few minutes, with the older sibling encouraging the younger. Several new staff also came, including the new Deputy Commandant, a former Marine and lately from SUNY Maritime.

Even some faculty sheepishly admitted that weeks before our opening day they had come by Land Hall and peeked into the window hoping to see all those treats beautifully laid out, only to be disappointed that they too would have to wait a few more weeks for Cookie Cafe.

We're off to a great start and resolved to support the Regiment in our own sweet way.
